Cognitive Development in Children

The Sensorimotor Stage (birth-2 years old) is characterized by the development of intellectual capabilities of infants through motor activities; the Preoperational Stage (2-7 years old) is the egocentric thinking stage wherein children learn symbols as they learn to use language; the Concrete Operational Stage (7-11 years old) is distinguished by the development of operational thinking to replace egocentric thinking; and the Formal Operational Stage (11 years old-adulthood) is typified by the capacity of the individual to think rationally and logically.
